The 2007 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg opened the Special Olympic Summer Games this year with nearly 100 officers representing agencies state wide. This years Final Leg started on the steps of the Capital in Frankfort with the head of the law enforcement Attorney General Stumbo addressing fellow Torch Run members on the importance of our mission and the power of our success. Also joining us this year was US Attorney Amul R. Thapar from the Eastern District of KY as well as a strong presence from Fort Campbell 716 th Military Battalion.
After leaving the capital officers received a warm welcome as residents of Steward Home joined and greeted the runners as they made their way onto the premises. The residents and staff orchestrated an amazing ceremony for the Torch Run participants including dancing and singing along with refreshments. This was truly one of the highlights of the days events.

The third stop was through Georgetown and into the universities campus where we were welcomed by Scott County Special Olympic Athletes and addressed by Mike Calhoun, SOKY Board of Director. Lunch was provided for all participating officers and athletes by the Georgetown Police Department.
The Torch was then brought into the Opening Ceremonies to mark the beginning of the 2007 Special Olympic Summer Games. Fort Campbell Military Police Officer A.J. Merrifield along with World Games Athlete Mathew Minning lit the Flame of Hope during the ceremonies to a roar of applause.
Officers were then invited to dinner hosted by the Richmond FOP and Louisville’s River City FOP. Events included door prizes and presentation of 2007 Torch Run Awards.
