The Kentucky edition to the 2007 World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics was another huge success. This years Convoy had 57 registered trucks varying from 18-wheelers and bob-tails to cement and dump trucks. The two-day event was filled with fun activities and top shelf musical performances raising over $25,000 for Special Olympics Kentucky in only its second year.
Drivers were able to pre-register and lay over at Southeast Christian Church while enjoying free musical performances by two nationally touring acts, the Rivoli Revue and Joey Holiday. The drivers and community were also treated to a buffet of appetizers provided by Bill Bray with Forward Air. Friday evening drivers also had a unique opportunity to socialize and play softball with local Special Olympics KY team the Louisville Athletics. The drivers and athletes both played very well and had a great time but in the end our very own Louisville Athletics won the game with the final score 8-6. Congratulations Louisville Athletics!!!!!!
Registered drivers also had the opportunity to bid on the coveted “VIP” truck spots for the 2007 Convoy. Allan Parnell of Mister “P” Express, Inc was the events auctioneer for the second year. Kentucky Law Enforcement Torch Run Director and Louisville Metro Sergeant Amy Brown led the driver meeting Saturday morning before the 9am start time explaining the details surrounding the route.
The Convoy returned to Southeast Christian Church to a celebration of the Special Olympics movement. Activities included a live auction; lunch provided by year round partner Texas Roadhouse; several musical performances including Mike Bush & the All-Stars. Mike Bush is a local Special Olympics athlete whom several years ago formed a country-rock band and has been melting faces ever since. Also joining in the festivities Louisville Metro Police Department brought out their Specialty Units to display. Everyone seemed to also enjoy both Sonny Fodale’s Bubble Truck and Schneider National, this years presenting sponsor, showcased their POW-MIA memorial truck which was appropriately also the 2007 Convoy Lead Truck.
